The recent discovery of a small sauropod dinosaur in India has sparked excitement among paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts alike. This new species, named Ceratocaudia antiqua, is a fascinating find that challenges our understanding of dinosaur evolution and distribution. Through digital reconstruction techniques, researchers have modeled Ceratocaudia antiqua's tail, which suggests that it held its tail horizontally and could swing it forcefully from side to side. This movement may have served as a modest defense against predators, even without specialized adaptations like the whip-tail of flagellicaudatans. But the implications of this discovery go beyond the physical characteristics of the dinosaur. It also sheds light on the early history of neosauropodan lineages, which have been controversial due to the lack of suitable outcrops and poor constraints on the ages of Lower-Middle Jurassic deposits. The discovery of Ceratocaudia antiqua pushes back the known global spread of the major dinosaur lineage by tens of millions of years, indicating a rich diversity of neosauropods during the Middle Jurassic.
